The Kullu-Manali Highway, which was washed away in a cloudburst that took place on August 1, has been partially restored, allowing one-way traffic movement as of Sunday.
Restoration work is underway, with the National Highway now open to traffic, albeit only for a single lane. However, the nearby Nirmand area has been particularly affected, with two people missing and one body recovered.
Meanwhile, the total number of missing persons has risen to 11, with 12 people reported missing or injured in total. Furthermore, 20 bridges have been swept away in the Bagipul and nearby areas.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu revealed that the losses since June 27 have included extensive damage to infrastructure and other assets.
“We are closely monitoring the relief and search operations in the affected regions,” he said, emphasising the government’s commitment to restoring normalcy.
Deputy Chief Minister and PWD Minister Vikramaditya Singh visited the flood-hit areas, where efforts were underway to reopen 193 closed roads and repair critical bridges.
“Our priority is to expedite rescue and relief measures with the support of NDRF, SDRF, and state police,” he said, urging swift assistance from the Union government.
On Sunday, search operations began early in the morning and will continue until the last body is retrieved.
The Director General of Himachal Pradesh Police, Atul Verma, confirmed ongoing search efforts, stating, “We will continue our efforts until the last missing person is accounted for,” acknowledging the relentless work of NDRF, SDRF, and emergency responders who have been pivotal in rescue operations.
Earlier, Chief Minister Sukhu stated that some bodies have been recovered and 55 people are still missing.
