The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced on Monday the successful installation of the first girder for the Carnac overbridge, connecting Central Railway’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Masjid stations. This milestone was achieved after a three-hour special traffic and power supply block in the early hours of October 20.

Rebuilding a Historic Connector

The road overbridge (ROB) is a crucial east-west link in South Mumbai, currently being reconstructed following the demolition of the original British-era structure. The BMC emphasized the collaborative efforts with Central Railway in completing this significant project.

Technical Details of the Installation

According to the BMC’s release, the south-side girder, which weighs 550 metric tonnes and spans 70 meters, was launched on October 14. The installation occurred over the weekend during the designated night block, ensuring minimal disruption to traffic. RITES Limited provided technical supervision for the installation, which followed approved engineering plans from Central Railway.

Future Developments

Looking ahead, the installation of the second girder is scheduled to take place in December, with plans to expedite the ongoing work. This development is expected to further enhance connectivity and ease congestion in one of the city’s busiest areas.

The successful installation of the first girder marks a significant step in the redevelopment of the Carnac overbridge, promising improved transportation and infrastructure for Mumbai residents and commuters alike.
