Over 90 passengers aboard a special ‘Bharat Gaurav’ train from Chennai to Palitana experienced food poisoning, railway officials said on Wednesday (November 29).

The incident occurred during a religious function organised by a privately booked group, and the affected passengers were promptly attended to by doctors at Pune railway station in Maharashtra on Tuesday evening.

‘Food not supplied by Railways’

The group had arranged the food privately, and it was not supplied by the Railways or the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), informed Central Railway’s chief public relations officer Dr Shivraj Manaspure.

The consumed food was prepared in the pantry car of the train. Passengers complained of symptoms such as nausea, loose motions, and headache between Solapur and Pune.

“Around 80 to 90 passengers from a coach complained of food poisoning between Solapur and Pune. They complained of nausea, loose motions and headache,” the official said.

“The train departed after 50 minutes. The condition of all the passengers was stable,” the official added.

Upon reaching Pune station, a team of doctors provided necessary treatment to all affected passengers on board. Despite the incident, the ‘Bharat Gaurav’ train resumed its onward journey after a 50-minute delay. The railway officials assured that the condition of all passengers was stable before the train continued its route.
