NTPC is preparing to expand into nuclear energy through both joint ventures and standalone projects, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Gurdeep Singh has said at per a report by PTI.
PTI report noted that, Singh said the company is working with technology providers and state governments to identify and develop individual nuclear projects. “We are collaborating with various nuclear technology providers and State governments to set up projects on our own,” he said in a company document.
NTPC outlines nuclear foray
NTPC currently has an installed capacity of 82,926 MW. This comes from 53 NTPC-owned stations and another 53 stations through joint ventures and subsidiaries. Its energy mix includes coal, liquid fuel, hydro and solar power.
In December 2024, Singh had announced NTPC’s plans to foray into nuclear energy. He had highlighted that nuclear power would become a crucial part of India’s energy sector over the next 20–30 years.
Speaking at the Bihar Business Connect 2024 summit in Patna at the time, Singh said nuclear power would play an important role in expanding the non-fossil energy portfolio of the state-owned company.
NTPC, NPCIL join hands for nuclear power
Last year, the government approved the formation of Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam (ASHVINI), a joint venture between Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) and NTPC. NPCIL holds 51 per cent stake in the venture while NTPC holds the remaining 49 per cent. The entity is mandated to build, own and operate nuclear power plants in India under the Atomic Energy Act.
According to PTI, Singh said NTPC has already operationalised ASHVINI and set up a new subsidiary, NTPC Parmanu Urja Nigam, to strengthen its nuclear expansion. “We (have) operationalised ASHVINI joint venture with NPCIL and also set up a new subsidiary NTPC Parmanu Urja Nigam as part of our long-term commitment to clean baseload power,” Singh said.
