IndiGo, one of the largest airlines in India, has signed a contract with Airbus confirming the order for 30 Airbus A530 aircraft. After confirming the order with Airbus, IndiGo’s wide-body order will be doubled to 60. IndiGo and Airbus had already signed a Memorandum of Understanding for these additional 30 aircraft at the IATA AGM held in New Delhi in June this year.
In all, the company has purchase rights for 40 more aircraft with Airbus.
Earlier in April 2024, the Indian passenger airline signed the purchase rights for 70 A350-900 aircraft with the French aircraft manufacturer.
“In line with India’s vision of becoming a global aviation hub and our aspiration to establish ourselves as a leading global aviation player by 2030, IndiGo is taking decisive steps forward,” said Pieter Elbers, Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo, in a statement.
Elbers added that when the ordered aircraft join the airline’s fleet in the years to come, they will play a pivotal role in enabling IndiGo to expand its reach, connect India with more destinations across the globe.
Significance of the order
Besides the latest order of 30 aircraft, IndiGo has temporarily damp-leased Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A321XLR aircraft. These are soon going to be inducted into the company’s fleet. The company is heavily investing in its fleet to expand its global operations. Recently, it launched flights to Manchester and Amsterdam, and soon flights to Copenhagen, London, and Athens will start.
“The A350’s unparalleled fuel efficiency, range and passenger comfort perfectly align with IndiGo’s ambitious growth plans and international long-haul network ambitions. This milestone reinforces our strong partnership with one of the fastest-growing airlines in the world”, Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, EVP Sales of the Commercial Aircraft business at Airbus, said.
IndiGo has a current fleet of over 400 aircraft and an order book of nearly 900 aircraft—including the A320neo, A321neo, and A321XL.
