Marking a significant development in strengthening India’s naval capabilities, the Ministry of Defence has inked a contract worth Rs 2956.89 crore with M/s Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Haridwar.

The contract involves the procurement of 16 upgraded Super Rapid Gun Mounts (SRGM) and associated equipment/ accessories for the Indian Navy, falling under the Buy (Indian) category.

Manufactured at M/s BHEL’s Haridwar Plant, the Upgraded SRGM represents a medium-caliber anti-missile/anti-aircraft point defense weapon system. Known for its sustained rate of fire and high accuracy, the system is designed to handle multiple engagements within complex, multi-threat scenarios. Its proven track record demonstrates exceptional performance against both missiles and agile fast attack crafts.

The installation of these advanced SRGMs is set to take place on existing and newly constructed Indian Navy vessels. Oversight for this crucial task will be provided by M/s Mazagaon Dock and Shipbuilders Ltd., Mumbai, and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers, Kolkata. This ambitious project is not only a boost to national defense capabilities but also an economic driver.

Over a five-year period, it is expected to generate an employment opportunity of two and a half lakh man days. Importantly, it encourages active participation from various Indian industries, including MSMEs, aligning with the government’s broader vision of achieving self-reliance (‘Atmanirbharta’) in the defense sector.

This strategic initiative not only fortifies the country’s defense infrastructure but also serves as a catalyst for economic growth and domestic industrial participation. As India continues to pursue advancements in defense technology, such collaborations contribute to building a robust and self-sufficient defense ecosystem.
