The Indian Army has taken a significant step forward in modernizing its communication infrastructure with the issuance of Project Sanction Orders (PSO) to two vendors for the development of a prototype Tactical Communication System (TCS).

Designed to replace the outdated Army Radio Engineering Network (AREN), TCS aims to meet the evolving demands of Tactical Command Control, Communication, and Intelligence Systems.

This milestone marks the first Make-I case under DAP 2020 across the three services, signifying the Army’s commitment to enhancing its operational capabilities.

Last month Project Sanction Order (PSO) was awarded to two Indian vendors by Lt Gen JB Chaudhari, DCOAS (CD&S). According to sources TCS prototype is expected to be ready within 22 months post which the Indian Army will induct Seven systems.

Significance

Development of ‘Tactical Communication System’ under Make I will be a game changer for Indian Army.  In consonance with the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative the army is vigorously pursuing all its Make projects wherein another Make I project is likely to reach the PSO stage soon and four Make I projects are being progressed towards AoN stage.

Its efforts towards ‘Atmanirbharta’ have resulted in award of contract to two Make II projects, both contracts have been awarded to two MSMEs, thereby supporting the MSME ecosystems.

Once the prototypes are ready these will be tested and checked before going into production. After introducing a TCS suitable for plains and deserts, the army will order seven more for mountainous areas. The Army wants to make sure the technologies used are secure.

Communication in the Tactical Battle Area (TBA)

Presently, the Army Radio Engineering Network (AREN) system that is being currently operated is outdated and inadequate to meet today’s TBA communication requirements.

Why?

Because the AREN system lacks the capability to handle communication requirements of the Tactical Command, Control, Communication and Intelligence (C3I) system. Therefore, there is an urgent need to replace AREN at the earliest.

Tactical Communication System (TCS) is the planned replacement of the AREN system which will provide voice, data and video communication to the field force in the TBA.
