Zupee has laid off 170 employees, or nearly 30% of its workforce, as part of a major business realignment to comply with the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, Storyboard18 reported. The online social gaming and entertainment platform will now pivot towards culturally rooted social games and short video content.
Confirming the development, Zupee founder and CEO Dilsher Singh Malhi said the decision was taken to adapt to the new regulatory framework. “This has been a tough call for us, but was necessary to adapt to the new regulatory framework. Our colleagues who are leaving us have been an integral part of Zupee’s journey and we will always remain thankful for their contribution in building Zupee into what it is today,” he said. Malhi added that the company would extend comprehensive support to help impacted employees transition into new roles.
Relief package for affected employees
The company has put in place a relief plan that includes financial support beyond contractual notice periods, with additional compensation linked to years of service. For several long-term employees, this amounts to as much as six months of financial security. Departing staff will also continue to receive health insurance coverage for the full term, with Zupee creating a Rs 1 crore medical support fund for added assistance.
To aid in career transitions, the firm has assured priority consideration for re-hiring when new roles open up. A dedicated team will also work with industry stakeholders to help affected employees secure opportunities across the sector.
Focus on cultural gaming and content
Going forward, Zupee said it will double down on culturally inspired social games and expand its entertainment offerings in order to build a “resilient and future-ready” business. The platform, which has over 150 million registered users, sees the realignment as key to ensuring long-term sustainability in a fast-evolving regulatory and market landscape.
“While these changes are never easy, we are confident of the path ahead. Our vision of reimagining social gaming and entertainment that connects with our cultural heritage and brings enjoyable experiences to people across the country remains unchanged,” Malhi said.
