Zepto Café recently crossed the 100,000 orders per day milestone, a feat celebrated by many in the quick commerce space. However, Yashraj Sharma, Founder & CEO of Wyzr, has raised concerns about whether such achievements should be celebrated at all.
Sharma argues that while scaling up operations at such speed is impressive, the fundamental question remains—are these businesses beneficial to society? “The response businesses give is that they provide what consumers want. I think that’s a lame excuse,” he wrote in a LinkedIn post, comparing the trend to historical marketing strategies that fueled cigarette consumption.
He highlighted how cigarette brands in the early 20th century targeted women to expand their market, drawing a parallel to the rapid proliferation of ultra-fast food deliveries. “Making unhealthy food available quickly is not much better than promoting smoking,” Sharma said, suggesting that the long-term consequences of quick commerce could outweigh the short-term convenience it offers.
While Zepto and other quick commerce players continue to grow, debates around the societal impact of their business models are becoming more prominent.
