With India celebrating Guru Nanak Jayanti and Karthika Purnima today (November 15), banks in some states of the country will remain closed, according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday list. 

Major cities where banks will remain shut today include Aizawl, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Hyderabad – Telangana, Itanagar, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kohima, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Raipur, Ranchi, Shimla, and Srinagar. Then November 17 is Sunday and banks in Karnataka will also be closed on November 18 for Kanakadasa Jayanti.

Guru Nanak Jayanti will be celebrated today, marking the birth anniversary of the first Sikh guru, Guru Nanak. This day is celebrated on the full moon day in the month of Karthika.

The RBI publishes regional and national, state wise holidays on its website. Banks are closed on Sundays, second and fourth Saturdays of the month. As outlined in the RBI holiday calendar, banks in India will remain closed for a total of 12 days in the month of November including public holidays, regional holidays, and regular closures on Sundays, second and fourth Saturdays. RBI classifies holidays into three categories: Real-Time Gross Settlement Holiday, Banks’ Closing of Accounts Holiday, and Holidays Under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

Despite the banks remaining shut on these specific days, customers can access banking services via net banking, ATMs, mobile applications, and bank websites. 

Upcoming bank holidays in November:

November 18 (Monday): Kanakadasa Jayanti – Banks will remain shut in Bengaluru.

November 20 (Wednesday): Assembly General Election, 2024 – Banks will stay closed in Belapur, Mumbai and Nagpur.

November 23 (Saturday): Seng Kutsnem – Banks will stay shut in Shillong.
