Indigo intends to incorporate wide-body aircraft into its fleet by 2027. During a session at the CAPA India Aviation Summit 2024, CEO Pieter Elbers disclosed the airline is exploring diverse financing options for fleet expansion. In April, Indigo confirmed an order for thirty A350-900 aircraft and revealed intentions to procure an additional 70 of the same model. As of now, Indigo has over 360 planes excluding the two Boeing 777 aircraft leased from Turkish Airlines. While the wide-body planes are expected to be added to Indigo’s fleet in 2027, the A321 XLR (Extra Long Range) aircraft will be added next year.
Advantages of adding XLR aircraft
There are going to be significant advantages for passengers with the introduction of XLRs. With the capability of XLRs to cover greater distances without refueling, IndiGo is poised to expand its route network, and reach new destinations. This strategic move aligns with the airline’s long-term vision for growth and market expansion.
Moreover, Elbers emphasized that the substantial aircraft orders made by IndiGo are not merely short-term solutions but integral components of a meticulously crafted long-term plan. These orders signify IndiGo’s commitment to modernizing its fleet and staying competitive in the dynamic aviation industry.
Indigo set to introduce business class seats
In an exciting development for passengers, the airline will also introduce business class seats, enhancing the in-flight experience and catering to a broader range of travelers.
Last year, IndiGo made history by placing an unprecedented order for 500 aircraft with Airbus, marking the largest single aircraft order ever placed by any airline. This monumental decision underscores the airlines’ vision for expansion and market dominance.
Delivery of A320 aircraft
Nearing 1000-mark, IndiGo’s outstanding order book for the A320 family of aircraft is impressively substantial. These aircraft are scheduled for delivery over the next decade, indicating a strong commitment to expansion and modernization. The order book includes a diverse range of aircraft models, including the fuel-efficient A320 neo, the spacious A321 neo, and the versatile A321 XLR, catering to various operational needs and passenger demands.
Elbers, at the summit, also highlighted the airline’s extensive reach across the country. Remarkably, over 87 percent of the population in India resides within a 100-kilometer radius of an airport served by IndiGo. This widespread coverage underscores IndiGo’s pivotal role in connecting people and communities, facilitating convenient air travel for millions of passengers nationwide.
