SpiceJet is set to launch seaplane operations in 2025 which will be connecting some of India’s most remote locations. These services will be carried on 20 routes including Lakshadweep, Hyderabad, Guwahati, and Shillong. The airline’s chairman and managing director, Ajay Singh, made the announcement on Saturday during a demonstration of a seaplane flight from Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada to Srisailam Dam. The event was attended by the Andhra Pradesh’s Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, and Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu.
SpiceJet has partnered with De Havilland to support seaplane trials at various locations across the country, providing essential engineering, technical, and logistical assistance.
SpiceJet Seaplanes To Revolutionise Regional Connectivity
Ajay Singh, the chairman and managing director of SpiceJet, said that the potential of seaplanes to revolutionise regional connectivity in India. He said that seaplanes could make remote and beautiful parts of India more accessible, helping to bridge gaps in infrastructure and transportation. Singh also emphasised SpiceJet’s commitment to this vision, stating that the airline is taking the necessary steps to make seaplane operations a reality. SpiceJet aims to collaborate closely with the government and aviation authorities to ensure the success of this new venture.
Avani Singh, the CEO of Spice Shuttle (SpiceJet’s seaplane division), also shared her excitement about leading this project. She said that SpiceJet’s goal in regional connectivity has been to make air travel affordable and accessible to everyone, no matter how remote their location. She sees seaplanes as a game-changer, especially for India, where geographic diversity—such as coastlines, rivers, and islands—can make building traditional infrastructure difficult. Seaplanes can overcome these challenges by connecting coastal areas, islands, and remote inland regions, bringing the benefits of air travel to these previously hard-to-reach destinations.
SpiceJet first introduced scheduled seaplane services in October 2020, operating flights from the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad to the Statue of Unity in Kevadia, Gujarat. Although the service was paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the airline is now ready to resume and expand this initiative.
The airline plans to officially launch its new seaplane services in 2025. This is part of SpiceJet’s ongoing efforts to boost connectivity and tourism in India, providing passengers with safe and affordable travel options to explore the country’s natural beauty and cultural landmarks.
