IndiGo has paid a reduced penalty of Rs 70 lakh to the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) in connection with an incident involving passengers eating on the tarmac at Mumbai airport in January. Initially, BCAS had imposed a fine of Rs 1.2 crore on January 18 for the event that occurred on January 14.
In a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on Tuesday, IndiGo stated that following an appeal, BCAS lowered the penalty to Rs 70 lakh through an order dated August 12.
The filing further noted a delay in disclosing the information, explaining that the airline had been reviewing potential legal remedies. After the review, IndiGo paid the revised penalty on September 10, 2024.
The incident occurred when passengers from a diverted Goa-Delhi flight, delayed due to fog in Delhi, rushed out of the aircraft upon landing in Mumbai, some sitting on the tarmac and eating. Following the event, BCAS issued a show cause notice before imposing the initial penalty of Rs 1.2 crore.
