In anticipation of Cyclone Fengal making landfall, Chennai International Airport has been temporarily shut until 7 PM on Saturday. Heavy rainfall and strong winds have intensified ahead of the cyclone, which is expected to cross the Karaikal-Mahabalipuram stretch, near Puducherry, later tonight.
Airlines have adjusted flight schedules in response to the adverse weather. IndiGo Airlines diverted all flights bound for Chennai, issuing an advisory through its official social media handle. The advisory stated, “Due to the impact of Cyclone Fengal in Chennai, flights operating to the city are being diverted. Our crew and airport teams are dedicated to providing all possible support & assistance during this time. We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding.”
Meanwhile, Puducherry authorities have ramped up security along the coastline. Senior Superintendent of Police Kalaivanan inspected coastal roads and beaches for cyclone preparedness. The public has been urged to avoid beaches, including Marina Beach, Pattinapakkam, and Edward Elliot Beach in Chennai, and popular tourist spots in Puducherry, which have been closed as a precautionary measure.
In a social media post, Puducherry Police advised, “In view of Cyclone Fengal, we urge you to exercise extreme caution and avoid visiting beaches and coastal areas.”
Around 300 police personnel have been deployed across coastal areas to monitor the situation. SSP Kalaivanan confirmed that beaches have been closed for the past four days and fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is also on standby for assistance.
The coastal areas of Puducherry reported rough seas and gusty winds on Saturday morning. While moderate rainfall was observed earlier in the day, the intensity of the sea’s turbulence is unusually high, as reported by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and avoid venturing into risky areas until the cyclone passes.
