A chaos has been encircling the aviation sector in India as several flights are seeing fog-induced delays. As these significant disruptions unleash havoc on the industry, IndiGo Chief Executive Officer Pieter Elbers has said that stakeholders in the aviation sector, including airlines and airports, will collaborate to assess and revise operations to minimise disruptions in similar situations, The Indian Express reported.

IndiGo flight disruptions

On Sunday, fog-related disruptions severely impacted flight operations, especially in case of IndiGo, which is India’s largest carrier with over 60% market share. Elbers mentioned that the situation has notably improved in the subsequent days, with less dense fog. While flight cancellations have largely normalised, some delays still persist.

Elbers anticipates a full normalisation of operational parameters, including the carrier’s on-time performance, within the next week.

What more did the IndiGo CEO say?

Talking about the disruptions in the sector, Elbers called the blanket of fog which has engulfed northern India a “challenge”.

He called the fog conditions the “worst” in many years. “Many of our stations in northern India were severely impacted by the fog situation. If northern India is under a blanket of deep fog, we are having a challenge,” he added.

He further said, “I would expect that the cancellation (of flights) setting is completely back to normal, provided no more fog. But we can patrol a lot of things in life, but that, we can’t. But it should be completely back to normal, I would say, by the weekend and in due course of next week, I do expect that our entire operation should be back to normal.”
