In a bold push to enhance India’s energy security and transition to cleaner sources, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman outlined the government’s Nuclear Energy Mission, which aims to develop at least 100 gigawatts (GW) of nuclear power capacity by 2047. The mission is part of India’s broader efforts to achieve sustainable energy goals and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

While presenting the Union Budget for 2025-26, Sitharaman stressed the importance of nuclear energy in achieving the country’s long-term energy transition. “Nuclear Energy Mission for Viksit Bharat. Development of at least 100 GW of nuclear energy by 2047 is essential for our energy transition,” she stated. This ambitious target aligns with India’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint while meeting growing energy demands.

To accelerate progress, the Finance Minister also highlighted the need for active partnerships with the private sector. For active partnerships with the private sectors towards this goal, amendments to the Atomic Energy Act and Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act will be taken out, the minister confirmed. These legislative changes are expected to pave the way for increased private sector involvement and investments in the nuclear energy sector.

As part of the government’s Nuclear Energy Mission for Research and Development, Sitharaman announced plans to operationalize at least five indigenously developed small modular reactors (SMRs) by 2033. SMRs, known for their compact design and enhanced safety features, are expected to play a key role in diversifying India’s nuclear power generation and addressing the country’s future energy needs.

The finance minister’s statements signal a significant push towards scaling up India’s nuclear energy capacity, with a clear focus on innovation, safety, and the role of the private sector in driving this transformation. As India moves forward with its energy transition goals, the emphasis on nuclear power is expected to be a cornerstone of the nation’s strategy to meet its environmental commitments and provide a sustainable energy future.
