IT major Wipro on Friday said it has topped the carbon disclosure leadership index (CDLI) rankings for India. Wipro, which works on ecological sustainability and various climate change initiatives on energy efficiency and renewable energy, scored 87 points on a scale of 100. A total of 10 companies from diverse sectors participated for the CDLI India chapter. The CDLI rankings were part of Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the gold standard globally for climate change.
Anurag Behar, chief sustainability officer, Wipro, said, ?Climate change is the most complex challenge facing humanity. India has a unique opportunity to traverse the path of a low carbon economic model and at Wipro, we look forward to playing an important role in this.? Focusing on the green initiatives implemented by the company, Behar added that all the new buildings of Wipro have a green certification. ?It is either gold or platinum certified,? he said.
The company has seen 25% improvement in energy efficiency in the last six years due to adoption of green building standards based on LEED framework.
In the last four years, our energy consumption has come down by 19% per person, added Behar. ?We have also set a target for green-house gas reduction in the next five years. Our benchmark is 4.9 tonne per person, which we are planning to cut it to 2.5 tonne,? he said. Wipro has witnessed 44% reduction in use of printing paper through effective automated controls and behavioral changes. The company?s 32% of water requirement is met through water recycling and harvesting.
It focuses on eco-sustainability initiatives for customers by building green data centers that consume 10%-20% less energy. The IT company jointly runs various sustainability programmes with education and government bodies and NGOs minimising Wipro?s internal footprint on energy, water and waste.
