Finally, the government has given serious thought to improving the quality of education. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said that the Eleventh Plan will be ?India?s educational plan?. The outlay for the sector has been increased from 7.7% of the total gross budgetary support in the Tenth Plan to over 19% in the Eleventh Plan. One hopes the money will be spent meaningfully and not wasted on glamorous but ultimately futile plans.

Faux democrat
Benazir Bhutto is dead; long live the dynasty. An imitation liberal democrat that she was throughout her political career, she has willed that her son be made the Bhutto family party?s successor. Writing in a British newspaper, Tariq Ali laments that Pakistan deserves better than this ?grotesque feudal charade?. But how? A party of the feudals for the feudals can fare no better; nor does it care to. So you have military dictators on one side, and sixpenny ?democrats? on the other. And the jehadis are waiting, too. Whoever wins, the country loses.

Fix accountability
The incident the article (?!ncredible !ndia?, Dec 28) mentions is a shame on our government. More so, because it swears by the aam aadmi. Let the authorities fix accountability for time-bound transactions at government offices.
