Branding the Centre?s U-turn on the Indo-US nuclear deal ?the lowest point of the UPA government?, the BJP on Monday said it served better for the party that Manmohan Singh?s ministry survived as much as possible.
Firing a fresh salvo at the UPA government, leader of Opposition and senior BJP leader LK Advani said the difficulties faced by the government in operationalising the agreement reflected the very nature of the ?opportunistic alliance?.
A day after Singh informed President Goerge W Bush about the hurdles in implementing the deal, Advani said, ?The nuclear pact stand-off was the lowest point of the UPA government.?
Explaining his contention, Advani insisted that the government?s move on the deal was a reflection of the nature of the ruling alliance, which comprised parties having diametrically opposite views on foreign and economic policies. ?It is bound to happen in an opportunistic alliance,? he added.
Advani maintained that mid-term elections were inevitable, as the government would not last its full term because of the existing contradictions and if his party was voted back to power it would ?renegotiate? the deal with the Indian national interest in mind.
Moreover, a senior BJP functionary on the condition of anonymity, however, maintained that it?s in BJP?s interest that the present government survived for as long as possible.
