Close on the heels of snapping up Ford?s luxury brands Jaguar and Land Rover for $2.3 billion, Tata Motors Ltd on Monday said the company will invest Rs 6,000 crore to expand its plant in Pune district and to set up vehicle testing facilities.
?This is the largest investment by an auto company in Maharashtra,? said Ravi Kant, managing director, Tata Motors Ltd on the occasion of singing the memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Government of Maharashtra here.
?The investment will go in revamping the plant to make it state-of-art and will have best testing facilities,? Kant said. While the facility will join the Pune plant, the company is looking for another location in Maharashtra. ?We are in the process of identifying one more location,? said Kant, adding that the facility will be a big one.
Asked what the capacity of the plant will be after expansion, Kant said, ?The total capacity will go up by 40%. It will be 600,000 units, including the existing capacity.?
The investment, to be made over four to five years, is part of the company?s five-year plan and already announced funding. All Tata Motors products will be manufactured at this facility. On whether Nano will be rolled out from the facility, Kant said, ?With demand expected to grow for Nano, there can be a possibility.? He, however, denied any such plans for the moment.
