The family members of truck driver Gurjant Singh, who is accused of trying to kill Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee, on Friday met senior police officers and requested them to consider the case sympathetically.

Gurjant Singh?s brother Veer Singh and seven other relatives discussed the matter with the ADG-CID, Raj Kanojia and DIG-CID Anuj Sharma for about half-an-hour at the CID headquarters at Bhabani Bhaban.

After the meeting, Veer Singh said they are willing to meet Mamata Banerjee with a similar request.

Gujrant?s arrest has embarrassed the Trinamool Congress. who are now saying that the police and not the driver is to be blamed for the mishap.

Sources said, the CID has asked Trinamool MP Suvendu Adhikari to clarify his complaint against the driver, but he has not responded. The police, on Thursday, wrote a formal letter to the MP.

Showing sympathy to the driver, secretary of CPM-backed transport workers? union, Subhas Mukherjee, said accidents occur occasionally but they cannot be treated as ?conspiracy for killing? people. Meanwhile a delegation of Bangla-Punjab Ekata Samiti met Forward Bloc leaders and sought their help in resolving the case. Bloc leaders asked them to write to the chief minister expressing their views.

?We feel the government should stand by the poor truck driver,? said a senior Bloc leader.

CPM sources said the issue has exposed the Trinamool?s efforts to malign the Left Front government. ?It is clear that Trinamool leaders are implicating innocent people,? said Md Selim, CPM spokesman.

Trinamool leader Partha Chatterjee, said: ?The ruling party is playing politics.?
