He may have got a headstart, but he will have to work hard to prove himself and succeed. That was Congress president Sonia Gandhi?s opinion on her son and party MP from Amethi, Rahul Gandhi?s ascension as Congress general secretary recently.
Responding to queries on her son?s future in the party, Sonia Gandhi ruled out any succession plans for him at this juncture. ?Unless you prove yourself, you cannot go ahead and I think this is not only in politics, this is so in every sphere of activity, whether it is business or any other profession? she said.
The Congress president conceded that the Nehru-Gandhi family name could be viewed as an advantage as it would give him a headstart. ?But in our system, which is a democratic one, you have to prove yourself? she said.
On whether his appointment was the first step for a rapid rise, Gandhi said ?I don?t see this… He himself would not want to see himself as that.
