Some important projects?functional and forthcoming?that may change the face of Rae Bareli in times to come
1 Rail Coach Factory: Popularly known as UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi?s ?dream project?, the rail coach factory (RCF) was sanctioned under the Supplementary Demand for Grants for the Railways in 2006. The objective of this project was to set up facilities for the manufacture of modern design coaches for Indian Railways. Though the foundation stone was laid by Gandhi in February 2007, construction work at the factory could only start in mid-2010 and production started in April 2011. The facility was inaugurated by the UPA chairperson in November 2012.
2 National Institute of Fashion Technology: The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) started functioning in July 2007. Situated on the campus of the ITI, it has at present 262 students. The new adjacent campus is expected to be functional by June 2014 and by 2018, it is expected to have around 700 students on its rolls.
3 Footwear Design & Development Institute: Situated in Fursatganj, the Footwear Design & Development Institute (FDDI), whose construction work started in 2007, was inaugurated by Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi in November 2010 to provide skilled manpower to the leather industry.
4 Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology: The ministry of petroleum and natural gas (MOP&NG) set up the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT) in Jais, Rae Bareli, through an Act of Parliament in 2007. However, due to delay in land acquisition, it began its academic session in 2008-09 from a hired property. The permanent campus is expected to be ready by 2014.The institution has been accorded the title of ?Institute of National Importance? along the lines of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
5 National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research: The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) got Cabinet approval in 2007 and started operations from a rented premises at the ITI. Courses started in 2009-10. The present state government has finally allotted 30 acres of land and the building is expected to be ready in a year?s time from now. NIPER has been created as a centre of excellence for higher education, research and development in pharmaceutical sciences.
6 Feroze Gandhi Institute of Engineering & Technology: Inaugurated by Sonia Gandhi in September 2004, the Feroze Gandhi Institute of Engineering & Technology (FGIET), with a spectacular 22.5-acre campus, was established with a vision to develop world-class technical professionals.
7 All-India Institute of Medical Sciences: The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to provide land free of cost to the Centre for the establishment of an All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rae Bareli. The state government will provide 150 acres of land, including 98.30 acres belonging to Nandganj Sihori Sugar mill and 49.85 acres from farmers of Sultanpur Aima and Dariyapur villages. A feasibility report is expected to be ready soon and the foundation stone is likely to be laid in April this year. The project is likely to be ready by the end of 2014.
8 Indira Gandhi Mahila university: The Union ministry of human resource development will set up Indira Gandhi Mahila University in Rae Bareli. The land has been identified at Lalganj tehsil. The announcement for this came in 2012 and the university will be built over 250 acres by the Banaras Hindu University. The land allotment process is on and it is expected to be ready by the end of 2014.
9 Mint Park: The Spices Board, under the ministry of commerce and industry, is setting up a mint park at Rae Bareli. Twelve acres of land has been identified which will have common facilities for processing and value addition of mint before export. The park was announced in 2009 but the state government gave the government land for it only recently. It will begin operations in a year.
10 FM: The Prasar Bharti Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) will set up an FM station for which 2.5 acres of land has been identified by the state government. This will be the first FM station in Rae Bareli. The proposal for this came in 2007, but the 2.5 acres of land became a big stumbling block. However, now this has been surmounted and the foundation stone is expected to be laid soon. The station will come up in 10 months.
11 Institute of Driving & Traffic Research: Hunt is on for land for a motor vehicle training college and 15 acres of land is yet to be allotted. It is likely to be ready by 2014.
12 National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project: The National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRiP) was conceived in 2005 but land acquisition for the project has begun only now. In the meantime, the National Accident Data and Analysis Centre was set up in the leased premises of ITI Ltd and was commissioned in February 2011. NATRiP represents a joint venture between the Union government, state government and the automotive industry to create a state-of-the-art testing, validation and R&D infrastructure.
13 Wheel factory: The forged wheel factory, adjacent to the rail coach factory, will come up in partnership with the state-owned Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL), controlled by the steel ministry. It will be erected on 27 acres of railway land. Railways will also ensure full offtake. Announced in this year?s rail budget, the project is to come up on 27 acres of land that is already in possession of the RCF.
