Five Independent Power Producers (IPPs) signed MoUs with the Orissa government on Friday to set up coal-based thermal power plants in the state. The five IPPs would invest a total of Rs 23,203.52 crore to set up power plants with a total capacity of 4800 mw.

The MoUs were signed in the presence of chief minister, Naveen Patnaik, and energy minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak. Prasanta Chandra Rath, managing director of Maadurga Thermal Power, Nirmal Kumar Agarwal, chairman of Adhunic Power, and BG Raghupathy, chairman & managing director, of BGR Energy Systems singed the MoUs on behalf of their respective companies. Orissa energy secretary PK Jena signed the papers on behalf of the state government.

The BGR Energy System is proposing to set up a super critical power plant of 1320 mw at Bhapur in Nayagarh at a cost of Rs 6287.93 crore , while JR Powergen is planning a 1980 mw super critical plant with an investment of Rs 7988.90 crore in Angul district . Adhunic Power (1320 mw), Vijaya Ferro & Power (120 mw), and Maadurga Thermal Power (60 mw) are proposing to set up their projects in Sonepur,Kalahandi and Cuttack districts respectively.

With the five MoUs, the total number of MoU companies in power sector has become 26. Earlier, the state govt had signed MoUs with 21 IPPs for projects of a total capacity of 26,300 mw.

The energy minister said of the 21 MoUs signed earlier, the progress of nine projects is quite satisfactory while eight other projects are making good progress.

Nayak said the state would get about 576 to 672 mw at variable cost from these new five MoU projects.
