India?s largest power generator NTPC is exploring the possibility of setting up a coal-based power project in Bangaldesh as part of bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector. Power generated from the plant will be evacuated to India through a transmission network to be developed by Powergrid.
NTPC will set up the proposed power plant as a joint venture project in partnership with Bangladesh Power Development Board. The Indian power utility, which is likely to have 49% stake, could also be vested with management control of the project.
?A team of technical personnel from the company is expected to visit Bangladesh next month,? NTPC chairman RS Sharma told reporters on the sidelines of India Energy Congress 2010 on Wednesday. The proposed plant will be fired by imported coal.
Meanwhile, the Indian government has asked central transmission utility Powergrid to examine the feasibility of evacuating power from the proposed power plant in Bangladesh.
Significantly, NTPC also has an offer to set up a coal-based power project in Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, it has been allocated responsibility for undertaking preparation of detailed project report for a hydropower project in Bhutan.
