Larsen and Toubro and Punjab State Power Corporation have joined hands to add 700-mw power capacity to the Rajpura Power Plant in Punjab.

The present capacity of the Rajpura plant is 1,400 mw (2x700mw) and the company intends to add another 700 mw to its capacity.

KD Chaudhri, chairman cum managing director, Punjab State Power Corporation informed that PSPCL and Nabha Power had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the expansion of Rajpura Thermal Power Project.

Chaudhri said Punjab government with a view to facilitate accelerated addition to power generation capacity in the state so as to meet the increasing electricity demand and achieve higher growth rates has given a green signal to this expansion.

He added that the government has extended 100% exemption from payment of fee and stamp duty for registration of the land, change of land use charges, external development charges, license and permission fee to the company.

He said the company has been bound by certain clauses to achieve important milestones in development of the project. He added that the cost of upgradation of canal network if required will be borne by the developer. About the present status of the Rajpura Thermal Power Project, Chaudhri said survey work and soil exploration is complete, Pile testing and boundary wall work are in progress.

CMD further said the Punjab government?s new ?Power Generation Policy 2010? is quite attractive and that many more developers would come to develop power plants in the state and soon chief minister Parkash Singh Badal?s dream of making Punjab a power surplus state would be fulfilled.
