In a cautious response to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi?s statements on the nuclear deal, the CPI(M) leadership said on Friday that the party would create a conducive atmosphere for the ongoing Left-UPA talks.
?The Prime Minister?s statement is in tune with the agreement between the Left and the UPA that the government will take into account the findings of ongoing talks before operationalisation of the deal,? CPI(M) politburo member Sitaram Yechury told FE. ?We never wanted to destabilise the government,? he added.
?The statements are good,? said another senior politburo member S Ramachhandran Pillai. ?The question of friction arises only when the government proceeds with operationalising the deal,? he added.
CPI general secretary AB Bardhan said, ?I have always been saying that why do you want to sacrifice your own government on the altar of this nuclear deal. Perhaps sobreity has returned.?
