The CPI(M) on Friday asked the UPA government to break its conspicuous silence over the US sanctions on Iran and reject them.
The party, which has been critical of India?s Iran policy since India voted against Iran in the IAEA in 2005, also expressed its ?strong opposition? to the fresh round of sanctions imposed by the US on Iran.
?The Government of India should clearly state that such sanctions will not be applied by India. These unilateral sanctions should not find acceptance in the international community. The UPA government must break its silence and speak out against the US stance towards Iran,? the CPI(M) politburo said in a statement.
?These unilateral sanctions are aimed at Iran?s financial system and economy. These come in the wake of the continuing threats to resort to military action against Iran,? it added.
Claiming that certain Indian companies were earlier forced to toe the US line on Iran, the politburo requested the companies not to succumb to the US pressure.
