Jamshedpur Utilities & Services Company (Jusco), a 100% subsidiary of Tata Steel and a leader in providing civic services, has recently bagged a leak detection and rectification order for various divisions of Chennai city from the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (CMWSSB).

The Rs 18.37 crore to be completed in 18 months is to be funded 35% by the ministry of urban development, 15% by the Tamil Nadu government (under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and 50% by the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (CMWSSB).

The CMWSSB job spread over 38 divisions in five Chennai districts includes renewal of existing 50 km of cast iron/PVC mains of various diameter with DI pipes, renewal of 42,000 house connections, etc.

Jusco, which now has a presence in states like Karnataka, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand in the water sector, had earlier bagged the country?s first concession-cum-BOT project in the shape of the Haldia Development Authority contract for construction and subsequent operation & maintenance of its 113.5 million litres per day (mld) water supply facility.

Sources said several water sector MNCs having turnovers in billions were now asserting there presence in the Indian water sector.
