The country?s second largest software firm Infosys Technologies has developed a mobile applications platform called Flypp which will offer a host of applications around retail, banking and health among others. The company has exclusively partnered with telecom service provider Aircel for the platform which will offer these applications to its subscriber base of 30 million users.

?Flypp is part of our continued thrust to provide platforms and products to help our clients rapidly capitalise on new business opportunities,? said SD Shibulal, COO and member of the board, Infosys. He added that the company is in talks with other telecom service providers as well for the platform.

Telecom companies such as Nokia and Vodafone, among others, have developed their own application stores and it is the first time that a technology company has build a mobile application store. Subhash Dhar, senior vice-president and head of the communications, media and entertainment business unit at Infosys said that the though the platform will remain the same for all operators, the differentiation will lie in the way companies offer the applications to their end users.

?The trick will lie in deciding the relevance of the applications for different markets along with the price points they are being offered at,? he said. The mobile application market is currently estimated to be around $1 billion currently.
