After completing 100 years of operations in the world automobile industry, US-based General Motors has announced the commencement of a year-long global initiative, GMnext, in which the company will focus on next-generation vehicles and technologies. To commemorate its centennial, the company revealed the production model of the Chevrolet Volt that will deliver 40 miles of gasoline and emissions-free driving.

?As part of the year-long centennial celebrations, General Motors India also intends to come out with special editions of its vehicle lines and would consider new marketing schemes and other innovative and customer-friendly initiatives that will create delight among our valued customers,? Karl Slym, president and managing director, General Motors India said in a statement.

Incidentally, Chevrolet is also celebrating its fifth anniversary in India and the company has made long-term investments in the country. ?We see immense potential for growth here and have made substantial investments in our operations in the country, which goes on to show our long-term commitment to India,? Slym added.

GM India had recently inaugurated its 1,40,000-unit second plant in India at Talegaon, Maharashtra at an investment of $300 million. Besides, the company will pump in another $200 million to set up an engine plant, at the same location, with a 1,60,000-unit capacity.

Founded on September 16, 1908 by William C (Billy) Durant, having manufacturing operations in 33 countries and nearly 24,000 dealerships worldwide, GM is the world?s largest automaker.
