In the background of CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat setting a fresh deadline of December 31 to end all negotiations regarding the Indo-US civilian nuclear co-operation agreement, the central committee (CC) of the party is starting its three-day meeting from December 20.
As the second round of IAEA talks concluded on Wednesday, the CC is likely to review the developments and spellout the next step.
The debate in Parliament has also given a fresh moral support to the CPI(M). Karat had demanded the UPA government to acknowledge the ?sense of the House? and stop operationalising the deal. In the ongoing CPI(M) regional conferences also the issue is being discussed threadbare.
?Any move to take the next steps to operationalise the agreement would be showing disrespect for Parliament and the essential tenets of parliamentary democracy,? Karat had written in the recent issue of his party?s mouthpiece People?s Democracy.
Apparently, the support its cadres have given to the central leadership?s position on the issue has also resulted in further toughening of its stand on the issue.
The only criticism the leadership is facing from the ground level is on the decision to allow the government to start the IAEA safeguard negotiations.
