Senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh?s letter, circulated to the BJP core committee on Wednesday, pointed to a tendency among ?party leaders becoming too self-centered to serve the public cause. ?Swa is to be found both in swayam (self) and swarth (self-interest),? he wrote in chaste Hindi. Demanding a thorough analysis of the results, Singh demanded to know about the supposed ?de-linking of rewards with performance (puraskar aur parinam)? in the party, obliquely directing his attack at the newly installed Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley, who headed the party?s election campaign. Jaswant mentioned a couplet by Goswami Tulsidas, ?par updesh kushal bahutere, je aachrahi te nar na ghanere? (those who preach to the world but fail to live up to the same ideals count little in public life).
