The West Bengal government has decided to probe the allotment of land to industrial units during the last few months of the previous regime. West Bengal commerce & industries minister Partha Chatterjee has asked West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) to investigate and submit a report soon.
Chatterjee during the board meeting of WBIDC on Monday, said a thorough investigation had to be conducted to find what amount of land had been given to different industrial units and at what price.
The state government has also decided to look into every single case in last two decades where industries have agreed to set up units in the state. An estimated 1,300 industrial units have given Industrial Entrepreneurs Memorandum since 1991 out of almost 4,700 companies which have shown interest in setting up units during the period. ?He has asked for a detailed status report of the 1,300 units,? said an official close to the development.
Earlier, chief minister Mamata Banerjee had said that industries interested in setting up units in the state would have to purchase the land directly from the owners and the state government would not have any role to play in that.
