New York City’s newly sworn-in Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, took oath on Thursday, making him the city’s youngest and first South Asian mayor. Among the many legacies he inherits from his predecessor, Eric Adams, is control of the official X account of the NYC Mayor.
The ‘@NYCMayor’ account, which was updated with Mamdani’s photo and a welcome post, however, will still continue to feature posts made by Adams.

What kind of posts had Adams made and does it differ from Mamdani’s stance?
Adams had praised Israel on several occasions. He had in fact met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in September 2025 and vowed to combat anti-Semitism.
This is a remarkable difference from Mamdani’s much-public criticism of Israeli actions in Gaza during the Israel-Hamas war.
Mamdani has been openly critical of the Israeli administration and many of his appointees, whom he added to his team, including popular YouTuber ‘Ms Rachel’ and actress Cynthia Nixon, too have voiced similar opinions and sided with Palestinians in the besieged Gaza enclave.
Why will the posts still be live?
Unlike federal accounts that switch handles, the city’s profile does not archive past posts. Community notes now add dates for clarity, as New York law requires preserving these public records, according to X.
Several users on X also highlighted how past posts, written by Adams’ administration, now looked bizarre under Mamdani’s name.
“This is hilarious lol. This is why every president gets a new Twitter account,” a user wrote, while another wrote “I’m crying bro they forgot to scrub out Adams’ mayoral posts.”

Lmfao. They need to archive/wipe this account clean when they handover to a new mayor else, people are going to come for Zohran’s head. 😃 https://t.co/E5Zibg7XZc

What had Mamdani said about Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu?
Mamdani had said he would arrest Netanyahu if the latter set foot in NYC after he assumed office. Netanyahu and his former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant face war-crime charges before the International Criminal Court (IRC) for starving and depriving Palestinian civilians in Gaza.
In his meeting with US President Donald Trump in the White House in November, Mamdani had also accused Washington of funding Israeli ‘genocide’ in Gaza, a charge Israel had denied, according to Times of Israel.
Mamdani took oath in a private ceremony at an abandoned subway station beneath the city hall on midnight on January 1.
