Former Utah Senator and ex-Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s sister-in-law, Carrie Elizabeth Romney, was found dead on a street in Los Angeles Friday evening (US time), as per American reports. At age 64, she was reportedly found dead near a shopping mall parking garage and a Hyatt Regency Hotel in the suburb Valencia, California, at about 8:30 pm.

Although details surrounding the fatal tragedy are still unclear, officials are considering she may have jumped or fallen from a building.

Los Angeles County Deputy Brenda Serna told the New York Post in an email that they were still trying to figure out if Carrie Romney “jumped or fell” from the garage or another building in the area. The Los Angeles Country Coroner’s office has also yet to determine a cause of death.

With toxicology tests pending at the time of writing, the LA County Medical Examiner listed her the cause of death as “deferred,” according to ABC News. No signs of foul play have been reported so far.

Carrie and Mitt Romney’s brother marriage failed after just over 8 years

In addition to the “heartbroken” former US senator breaking his silence on the issue, it was also revealed that his brother had filed for divorce from Carrie Elizabeth four months ago, according to the Daily Mail. George Scott Romney, who is father to former RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel through his first marriage, reportedly separated from the now-deceased 64-year-old woman on May 25.

Files obtained by the UK outlet indicated that Scott filed for divorce on June 10 – just over 8 years of marriage. He cited irreconcilable differences, with reports now suggesting that Carrie was looking for spousal support but George didn’t agree to it. Moreover, she had even requested for her maiden name, Carrie Elizabeth Dimas, to be restored.
