Quornelius Radford, an Army Logistics Sergeant, was identified as the suspected shooter who shot five soldiers Wednesday at Fort Stewart in Georgia. The incident took place at one of the US’ largest Army bases.

The alleged gunman is said to have used a personal handgun instead of a military weapon at the scene where he worked. During an afternoon press conference on August 6 (US time),  Brig Gen John Lubas, commanding general of the 3rd Infantry Division, said “an active-duty soldier assigned to Fort Stewart, Georgia” took aim at five of his fellow soldiers, leaving them injured.

The unexpected development took shape shortly before 11 am. All five soldiers impacted by the shooting spree were eventually declared to be in stable condition, and are expected to make full recoveries.

Who is Quornelius Radford? What we know about the Georgia shooting suspect so far

The Army official under scanner is a 28 years old man from Jacksonville, Florida, and worked as a supply sergeant. Having enlisted in the Army since 2018, he has never been deployed in combat, according to The Associated Press. Upon being arrested at 11:35 am the same day, Radford remains in pretrial custody.

Brig Gen Lubas said that soldiers who were present at the scene at the time of the shooting incident “immediately and without hesitation” handled the suspected shooter, preventing casualties and a heart-rending tragedy in broad daylight.

Georgia shooting suspect already shrouded under DUI scandal

While a motive for the Wednesday shooting rampage has yet to be revealed, Quornelius Radford was already in hot water ahead of the recent incident. His previous brush with the law had him awaiting an August 20 hearing in Hinesville, a small town near the base, over claims of driving under the influence. He is believed to have run a red light after 1 am on May 18, as per court documents. He has since been freed on a $1,818 bond, and is being represented by attorney Sneh Patel.

“I do believe he was arrested locally for a DUI. That was unknown to his chain of command until the event occurred, and we started looking into law enforcement databases,” said Lubas.

With the investigation ongoing, officials are likely to look into the man’s previous behavioural issues, if any. CNN analyst Ret Gen Ty Seidule remarked that Radford would be prosecuted under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump responded to yet another US shooting horror by calling Radford a “horrible person,” and noting that authorities would be taking “very good care of this person who did this.”

Internet sleuths dig up dirt on Quornelius Radford

Social media appears to have dug up some proof about Radford’s political alignment. A user has since taken to X and alleged that the Fort Stewart shooting suspect is a registered Democratic voter.

“Quornelius Radford is of course a registered democrat in his home state of Florida,” they shared online. “I blurred out the address just incase he has family living there, for their safety.”

The widely circulated claims were traced back to the Florida Residents Directory website. See here.
