US President Donald Trump announced that he will posthumously award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to conservative activist Charlie Kirk, praising his impact on American politics.

Kirk was shot during a live Q&A at Utah Valley University earlier on Wednesday.

“Charlie was a giant of his generation, a champion of liberty and an inspiration to millions and millions of people,” Trump said speaking outside the Pentagon on Thursday morning for the memorial services marking the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

“The date of the ceremony will be announced, and I can only guarantee you one thing, that we will have a very big crowd,” President said, adding, “Our prayers are with his wonderful wife, Erika and his beautiful children, fantastic people they are.”

“We miss him greatly, yet I have no doubt that Charlie’s voice and the courage he put into the hearts of countless people, especially young people, will live on.”

What is the Presidential Medal of Freedom?

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honour in the United States, awarded by the President to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the country’s security, national interests, world peace, or cultural and public service.

The medal was established in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy and can be given to both US citizens and non-citizens, and occasionally to military personnel for extraordinary service.

Recipients are selected by the president, and the medal may be awarded posthumously, as seen with figures like John F. Kennedy.

A special distinction, “with Distinction”, is sometimes granted to those whose contributions are considered of the highest caliber.

Notable recipients of the medal include Joe Biden, Pope Francis, Steven Spielberg, and Bruce Springsteen, recognising achievements in areas such as science, public service, and the arts.

The medal features a white star surrounded by 13 gold stars on a blue field, suspended on a blue ribbon that mirrors the presidential seal.

It is considered a symbol of recognition for extraordinary accomplishment and dedication to the nation’s values.
