July 4 is a federal holiday in the United States, commemorating the nation’s independence from British rule. Commonly known as Independence Day, it marks the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. This year, Americans will celebrate the 2th anniversary of the founding of the United States with parades, fireworks, fairs, speeches, and more. As a federal holiday, many public and private services will be unavailable on July 4, 2025. Here’s a look at what will be open and closed across the country:

What will be closed?
Federal offices, including courthouses and legislative buildings, will be closed. State-level government services and offices will also be shut. Major banks such as JPMorgan Chase, Citibank, Bank of America, PNC, Truist, and Capital One will not operate. Both the Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange will be closed for the day.

The US Postal Service will suspend operations, meaning no mail delivery or P.O. box services. UPS will not offer regular pickup or delivery, and some of its stores may also close. Public libraries, DMV offices, and most government-run warehouses will be shut as well.

What will be open?
Online banking and ATMs will remain accessible, and Capital One Cafes will be open for basic banking. FedEx will offer limited services at FedEx Office locations, while FedEx Custom Critical and UPS Express Critical will continue operations.

Grocery stores like Walmart, Target, and those under the Kroger umbrella—including Fred Meyer, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Ralphs, and QFC, will be open during regular hours. Whole Foods stores are expected to operate normally, though Trader Joe’s will close early at 5 p.m. Pharmacies such as CVS and Walgreens will mostly remain open, although some locations may adjust their hours. Restaurants, museums, and zoos are generally open, though a few may close early or have modified schedules for the holiday.
