Senior Democratic leader Rahm Emanuel lashed out at US President Donald Trump in no uncertain terms this week — accusing him of derailing a 40-year relationship with India “because of his ego”. The former three-term US Representative claimed that the POTUS had upended the status quo because Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not back his relentless quest for a Nobel Prize. The former US Ambassador to Japan also claimed that Pakistan had given “some money” to Trump’s son.

“President Trump has thrown away the relationship with India because of his ego and some money from Pakistan that was paid to his son…He threw it all away because Modi would not say that the President deserves a Nobel Peace Prize for the ceasefire (with Pakistan),” he alleged during a recent interview.

It is no secret that US President Donald Trump is on the hunt for a Nobel Peace Prize. The POTUS had campaigned vehemently (and unsuccessfully) for the award in recent months — repeatedly insisting that he had helped end multiple wars across the globe. Claims about Trump singlehandedly averting nuclear war between India and Pakistan have also met resistance and repeated clarifications from New Delhi. But the India-US relationship had reportedly plunged to an all-time low in June after Prime Minister Narendra Modi ‘rejected’ a Nobel nomination bid from Trump.

Pakistan nominates Trump yet again

The remarks came even as Trump lauded India and PM Modi (without naming him) on Monday during the Gaza peace summit in Egypt. The President had also heaped praise on Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif and “favourite field marshal” Pakistan army chief Gen Asim Munir. Sharif said peace has been achieved in the Middle East after “untiring and relentless efforts” of President Trump.

“Pakistan had nominated President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his outstanding (and) extraordinary contributions to first stop the war between India and Pakistan and then achieve a ceasefire along with his very wonderful team,” he said.

Sharif said he would like to nominate Trump again for the Nobel Peace Prize for “saving millions of lives not only in South Asia but also in the Middle East”.

Meanwhile US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent hailed India as an “ally” on Monday as he pushed for support against China.

“This is China versus the world. They have pointed a bazooka at the supply chains and the industrial base of the entire free world. We have already been in touch with the allies. We will be meeting with them this week and, you know, I expect that we will get substantial global support from the Europeans, from the Indians, from the democracies in Asia,” he told Fox Business on Monday.
