‘South Park’ returned for its 27th season on Wednesday night with an explosive and satirical premiere episode titled ‘Sermon on the ‘Mount.’ The episode gets straight into political parody, placing a caricature of US President Donald Trump back in the White House and, bizarrely, in bed with Satan.
What happened in the season opener?
The episode shows Trump arguing with the Canadian prime minister about tariffs. When asked if he is acting like a dictator, Trump responds, “You don’t want me to bomb you like I did Iraq!” He adds, “Iran, Iraq, what the hell’s the difference?” Later, he is seen trying to seduce Satan in bed. When Satan rejects him, Trump insists, “Come on Satan, you know you can’t resist this!” before revealing a comically small penis, prompting Satan to snap, “I can’t even see anything, it’s so small.” After another season, Trump returns to his bed with Satan after the devil confronts him about his name being on the “Epstein list.” “It’s strange that you just tell everyone to relax whenever it comes up,” Satan remarked. At the end of the episode, the program also made fun of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s cancellation.

Meanwhile, the town of South Park is spiralling. Cartman falls into depression over the cancellation of his favourite NPR show, while Randy Marsh tries to prevent Jesus from taking over South Park Elementary. As tensions rise, an angry mob storms Mr. Garrison’s house, blaming him for the nation’s troubles, only to learn he has not been president for years.
Why was the season delayed?
The path to the Season 27 premiere was not smooth. Originally slated for July 9, the premiere was pushed to July 27 due to complications related to the Paramount-Skydance merger. The official South Park X account posted a profanity-laced statement blaming the delay on corporate interference.
“This merger is a shit show and it’s f**king up South Park,” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone said. “We are at the studio working on new episodes and we hope the fans get to see them somehow.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, Parker and Stone had a $3 billion decade-long deal with Paramount. However, Skydance, which is in the process of merging with Paramount, reportedly pulled out of the agreement. The creators also accused Skydance’s incoming president Jeff Shell of interfering in their contract talks with Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery.
Despite the turmoil, South Park has now secured a new agreement with Paramount. Under the revised deal, 50 new episodes have been ordered, and all previous 26 seasons will stream on Paramount+. New episodes will air first on Comedy Central and then be made available on the streaming platform the next day.“We are grateful for this opportunity and deeply honored by the trust placed in us,” Parker said. “This is about more than a contract, it’s about our commitment to this organization, our teammates, and our fans.”
