Far-right activist Laura Loomer faced backlash after trading barbs online with journalist Mehdi Hasan. This time, the two clashed over a post involving Vice President JD Vance and New York City mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani. Hasan criticised Vance for targeting Mamdani and called him out for making such offensive remarks despite being married to a “Brown woman.”

Laura Loomer and Mehdi Hasan clash over JD Vance’s post

The spat began when Mehdi Hasan reacted to a post by JD Vance, who mocked Mamdani’s emotional remarks about post-9/11 discrimination. “Imagine being married to a Brown woman and having mixed-race kids and then publicly mocking other Brown people as they talk publicly and emotionally about their experience of racism,” Hasan wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Vance is just a bad person.”

Vance had earlier shared a clip of Mamdani recalling how his aunt stopped taking the subway after 9/11 because she didn’t feel safe wearing a hijab. Vance commented on the post, writing, “According to Zohran, the real victim of 9/11 was his auntie who got some (allegedly) bad looks.”

Given their history of online feuds, Loomer targeted Hasan’s defence of Mamdani. “@JDVance’s wife isn’t a Muslim,” she wrote. “If she were, he never would have been Vice President because MAGA isn’t going to ever support a Muslim being in the White House. Do you think Hindus and Muslims are the same?”

This comes days after Loomer told Hasan to go back to the “Islamic country” he comes from, saying, “You are a Muslim immigrant. You can go back to the UK and the Islamic countries your parents were born in at any time you want.” Afterwards, the Indian-origin former MSNBC host reminded her that “India is not an Islamic country.”

Her comments sparked massive backlash online, with many users accusing her of promoting religious intolerance. Loomer, known for her history of racist remarks and social media bans, appeared unbothered by the criticism. “The racism is showing. It’s disgusting,” one person commented. “this is just ragebait now,” another said. “Can’t expect anything better from this woman,” a thrid user commented.

Zohran Mamdani says ‘muslims were hit hard after 9/11’

Zohram Mamdani recently appeared in a debate for New York City mayoral candidates. Later, in a news conference, he shared that his family was personally affected by 9/11, adding that his aunt stopped taking the subway after the attacks.

Vance also criticised Mamdani last week for meeting with Imam Siraj Wahhaj, a Brooklyn-based leader who was listed as a potential unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Centre bombing, according to the NYT. In an MSNBC interview on Saturday, Mamdani called Vance’s comments about his aunt “inappropriate.” He said, “This is all the Republican Party has to offer.“ Mamdani added, “cheap jokes about Islamophobia so as to not have to recognise what people are living through, attempts to pit peoples’ humanity against each other.”

Later in a 10-minute speech in Bronx, Mamdani said, “I will not change the faith that I’m proud to belong to,” Mamdani said. “But there is one thing I will change: I will no longer look for myself in the shadows. I will find myself in the light.”
