Although Hurricane Erin weakened to a Category 3 hurricane over the weekend in the United States, it has re-intensified into a Category 4 storm, as per the latest local US updates and reports. The new development comes after it completed an eyewall replacement cycle. 

The US National Hurricane Center determined that the hurricane was about 965 miles (1,555 km) south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph (215 kph). As per their new warning, “some additional strengthening is expected over the next 12 hours followed by gradual weakening.” 

Prior to dampening, Erin original peaked at Category 5 status over the weekend, packing winds of 160 mph. The Turks and Caicos Islands and parts of the southeastern Bahamas are under tropical storm watches.
