US President Donald Trump’s son, Eric Trump, slammed New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani on Monday. Speaking to Fox News, he accused Mamdani of being a far-left ‘communist’ politician and claimed he “hates the Indian population.”
“There is no place in the world that can compete against New York City. No one can compete yet. Then you have a socialist, a communist, or whatever you label him, who wants to nationalise grocery stores and wants to arrest Netanyahu. He hates the Jewish people, hates the Indian population,” Eric said during the interview.
He argued that Mamdani should focus on basic issues like safer streets, cleaner neighbourhoods and reasonable taxes. “The city could thrive without government intervention,” he added.
Zohran Mamdani’s historic victory
Zohran Mamdani, 34, an avowed democratic socialist, won the mayoral election by defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
He is set to become New York City’s first Muslim mayor and the first person of South Asian descent to lead the city. He will be sworn in as New York’s 111th mayor on January 1, 2026.
Trump’s potential meeting with Mamdani
President Trump has repeatedly attacked Mamadani and has called him a “communist lunatic” and even threatened to withhold funding. Mamdani has expressed willingness to cooperate.
One of the biggest challenges ahead for Mamdani will be managing his relationship with the White House while delivering on his affordability promises.
However, at a food pantry event in the Bronx, he confirmed that his team had contacted the White House to schedule a meeting. His main goal remains the central theme of his campaign: making New York more affordable.
Trump himself told reporters on Sunday night that he intends to meet with Mamdani, saying, “we’ll work something out.”
After securing his victory, Mamdani said he plans to “work every day to honour the trust” New Yorkers placed in him and is open to speaking with Trump or anyone else “about things that could benefit the people of the city.”
