George Clooney is facing backlash after criticising former Vice President Kamala Harris. The Hollywood star and longtime Democratic donor, in a recent interview with CBS, voiced his frustration over Harris’s nomination to replace Joe Biden, calling it a “mistake.”

The comment, however, sparked massive outrage online, with many calling Clooney one of the biggest ‘helpers’ of Trump after his controversial New York Times op-ed titled “I Love Joe Biden. But We Need a New Nominee.”

George Clooney criticised after calling Harris’ nomination a ‘mistake’

During the interview, Clooney argued that the party should have held a new primary to choose its candidate instead of conducting a virtual delegate vote.

Author Don Winslow, whose books have been featured among The New York Times Critics’ Choice picks, slammed the remarks on X. “GEORGE CLOONEY just can’t shut the f*** up,” Winslow wrote on X. “Another stupid interview today. Another stupid set of quotes. George Clooney has done more to HELP Donald Trump than any other celebrity in the world, in my opinion. The guy is an insufferable a****** who keeps helping Donald Trump.”

Following the post, hundreds of social media users accused Clooney of damaging Democrats’ chances and indirectly aiding Trump’s campaign. One user wrote, “Can’t stand him. Talk about entitlement, when he lives in a mansion in Lake Como, Italy. After what he did to President Biden, I will never watch his movies again.”

Another user slammed Clooney’s silence after Biden dropped out: “I will never get over how he took such a stance on President Biden… and yet, with so much more proof of severe instability concerning Trump… nothing. The silence says it all.”

Others criticised him for speaking now after months of silence. “Remind me why his opinion matters,” one wrote. “He screwed President Biden; who did he think would run after Biden left? So his decision to suddenly keep quiet after Biden quit, not to endorse or support Kamala, was based on what? And now he’s blaming her for losing? Yes, George, shut up.”

Some even blasted his filmy background privilege. “He’s an entitled, overrated actor worth $700 million, someone who’s long forgotten what real life looks like for everyday Americans,” another user wrote. “Until he lives through what the rest of us are enduring under this regime, he should probably sit this one out.”

What did George Clooney say?

Clooney’s remarks came during an interview on CBS’s Sunday Morning, where he repeated the comments he made earlier last year in a  New York Times op-ed, asking Biden to step down.

In the interview, Clooney said, “We had a chance, I wanted there to be, as I wrote in the op-ed, a primary. Let’s battle-test this quickly and get it up and going. I think the mistake with it being Kamala is she had to run against her own record. It’s very hard to do if the point of running is to say, ‘I’m not that person’. It’s hard to do and so she was given a very tough task.”

He added that, while he stood by his words, he acknowledged the Democrats were in a difficult position: “I think it was a mistake, quite honestly. But we are where we are.”

In his op-ed, published after Biden’s poor debate performance against Donald Trump, Clooney wrote: “We are not going to win in November with this president… We won’t win the House, and we’re going to lose the Senate. This isn’t only my opinion; it’s the opinion of every senator, congress member, and governor I’ve spoken with in private.” The piece caused a divide within the Democratic camp, and even inside the Biden family.
