At least 5 firefighters were injured while responding to reports of a heart-rending car explosion in the Bronx, New York City, Wednesday night (US time), according to officials cited in US reports. An update from the New York Post indicated that six people were hurt.

Billowing smoke and massive flames were caught on camera, as per a video tweeted by US outlet PIX11. Within seconds, the situation spirals out of control as an unprecedented fireball engulfs everything in sight.

Injured New York City Fire Department (FDNY) officials were ultimately taken to Jacobi Hospital to be treated for burns of varying severity, sources from the agency detailed, as per ABC 7. Meanwhile PIX11 reported that one firefighter was hospitalised for serious burns to the face.

They are said to have been responding to a car explosion report around 7 pm local time at 955 Westchester Ave, Intervale Avenue and Kelly Street.

He claimed that the first “pop” came from the trash, followed by the other one, which escalated into a car “explosion.” The witness added, “The flames flew way up. It was a fireball.” His account of the fiery incident aligns with the videos circulating online. The delivery driver further noted that three vehicles were damaged due to the explosion.

With an investigation underway, officials are still figuring out the case of the fiery spark. The fire was reportedly completely under control around 8:19 pm.

A message from NotifyNYC at the time read: “Due to FDNY activity, expect traffic delays, road closures and a heavy presence of emergency personnel in the area of Fox Street and Westchester Avenue in The Bronx. Consider alternate routes and allow for additional travel time.”
