A male suspect believed to be responsible for two people getting shot at a Walmart in Evergreen Park, Chicago, on Wednesday afternoon (US time) was taken into custody. With authorities responding to a report of an active shooter at the 2500 West 95th Street just before 3 pm, the alleged gunman was apprehended within about 15 minutes of having fled the location. He reportedly knew one of the victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

Located in Cook County, Illinois, Evergreen Park shares the border with Chicago. As per recent updates shared by US reports, a heavy police presence surrounded the retail outlet after the incident.

Victims of Walmart shooting

According to Evergreen Park Police Chief Michael Saunders, the shooting erupted following a dispute between two acquaintances. Of the two victims shot on Wednesday, a 23-year-old man was struck in the leg multiple times. Meanwhile, a 70-year-old woman suffered from a gunshot in her foot. Both of them have since been transported to local hospitals.

The older victim is said to have been an innocent bystander, who was ultimately shot outside the store entrance. The suspect is believed to have known the other 23-year-old person, whom he chased into the retailer.

“He knew the victim, or he was familiar with the victim because he was chasing after him and shot multiple times in the store at him, hit him in the leg,” Saunders said at briefing.

“He had severe blood loss and then the offender ran out of the store. Within about 15 minutes, he was apprehended. He was identified by store security — he was wearing the same clothing as he was inside the store when we made identification on him.”

The suspect’s weapon was recovered from the scene. Police said he the shooting suspect was eventually taken into custody on the 9300 block of Country Club Drive, whereas the vehicle he drove to Walmart was found on the 800 block of West Marquette, as per NBC Chicago.

The suspect has yet to be identified. Amid the ongoing investigation, the Walmart store in Illinois remained closed at the time of writing.
