Elisabet Lann, Sweden’s newly appointed Minister for Health, fainted during a live press conference on Tuesday, just hours after taking office. The incident happened in front of journalists and senior government leaders, including Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Christian Democrats leader Ebba Busch, according to a report by TMZ.
Lann was named as the replacement for Acko Ankarberg Johansson, who resigned a day earlier for undisclosed personal reasons. A member of the Christian Democrats, Lann had previously served as a municipal counsellor in Gothenburg, where she worked on social welfare and healthcare issues.
Eyewitnesses said Lann had just finished her remarks and was stepping back when she suddenly fainted. She fell to the floor, knocking over the podium with her. The collapse happened while others on stage were engaged in light conversation, seemingly unaware of what was about to occur.

Immediate response from officials
Security staff quickly rushed to her aid, along with Prime Minister Kristersson and others on stage. Reports said she appeared unconscious and may have hit her head on the lectern during the fall.
After being helped offstage, Lann returned a short while later to reassure the audience. “This was not exactly a normal Tuesday, and this is what can happen when you have a blood sugar drop,” she said, explaining the fainting spell was due to low blood sugar.
A spokesperson confirmed that she had fainted but recovered enough to return briefly.
The press conference ended early, with Q&A sessions and other speeches cancelled. While it is not clear if Lann received full medical treatment, local media reported she did not appear to be seriously hurt.
Concerns over health and new role
The incident comes at a time when Sweden’s healthcare system is already under pressure, facing criticism for long hospital wait times and staff shortages. Lann’s collapse during her first public appearance has sparked questions about whether she will be able to take on the challenging role immediately.
So far, the Swedish government has not released any official updates on Lann’s medical condition.
