Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi landed in Dallas, Texas, on Sunday, kicking off his three-day visit to the United States. This marks his first trip to the US since taking on his role as the opposition leader.
Upon his arrival, Gandhi was greeted warmly by Sam Pitroda, Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress, and members of the Indian diaspora. A ceremonial welcome ensued, including traditional aarti and bouquets.
Speaking on the significance of his visit, Gandhi shared his enthusiasm for engaging in dialogues that would help strengthen the relationship between India and the US. In a Facebook post, he expressed gratitude for the reception, stating, “I eagerly look forward to engaging in meaningful discussions and insightful conversations that will further strengthen the bond between our two nations during this visit.”
During his brief but packed itinerary, Gandhi will participate in discussions and meetings in both Dallas and Washington, DC. His first engagement includes interactions with students, academicians, and community members at the University of Texas. On September 9 and 10, he will meet with think tanks, the national press, and various leaders in Washington, DC.
Sam Pitroda emphasised the high demand for Gandhi’s presence from Indian diaspora members, diplomats, academics, and business leaders eager to discuss bilateral issues. He remarked, “Rahul Gandhi’s visit is an opportunity to engage with the diaspora and international stakeholders, reflecting the interest in states governed by Congress.”
This visit follows Gandhi’s recent appointment as Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha by the Congress Working Committee in June.
The tour is expected to enhance dialogue on critical matters concerning India’s international relations and diaspora engagement.
