Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking at the BRICS Summit, urged member countries to cooperate in securing global supply chains for critical minerals such as lithium, nickel, and graphite. These minerals are essential for manufacturing high-end technologies like electric vehicles, drones, and battery storage systems.
Modi cautioned against their use as geopolitical tools, stating, “It’s important to ensure that no country uses these resources for its own selfish gain or as a weapon against others.” His remarks come amid growing global concern over China’s dominance in the rare earths sector and its export restrictions on these vital resources.
Responsible AI and global standards
In the same session, which focused on multilateralism, financial matters, and artificial intelligence, Modi addressed the pressing need for global AI governance. He called for the creation of global standards that could verify the authenticity of digital content, ensuring transparency and curbing misuse.
“AI has immense potential to improve everyday life, but it also brings risks of misuse, bias, and ethical dilemmas,” Modi said, announcing that India will host the AI Impact Summit next year. “We must work together for responsible AI. Innovation and regulation must go hand in hand,” he added.
Proposal for a BRICS Science repository
To support research and innovation, the Prime Minister proposed the creation of a BRICS Science and Research Repository, which would serve as a shared resource for member nations and developing countries in the Global South. He emphasised inclusive development, stating that nations struggling with food, fuel, fertiliser, and financial crises must be supported equally. “Double standards will not lead to sustainable and inclusive development,” he warned.
New BRICS vision under India’s chairmanship
Modi reiterated India’s commitment to redefine BRICS under its upcoming chairmanship. “BRICS will mean Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability,” he said at a session on environment, climate action (COP-30), and global health.
Bilateral talks with Bolivia and Uruguay
On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi met with Bolivian President Luis Alberto Arce Catacora, discussing ways to deepen cooperation in critical minerals, trade, healthcare, and space.
He also met Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi to explore enhanced partnerships in chemicals, pharmaceuticals, defence, and digital technology.
